Della Norma George

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and special friend to many, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 94 years of age. Della was born on November 1, 1916 in Los Angeles, California. She met her future husband, James, at Inglewood High School in the 1930's and they were married in November 1941, before James enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific in WWII. James and Della were married for 58 years before his death in 1999. Della was a devoted mother and spent many years supporting her children, Gary George and Sandy (George) Field, through PTA membership and presidencies. She was the Librarian at Granada Middle School for 20 years before she retired.Della was an accomplished Quilter and was one of the founding members and senior member of the Whittier Seniors Quilting Group. Attending the weekly quilting meetings was one of the highlights of her life. One of the other highlights was eating and socializing at Scotty's Family Restaurant, on a daily basis. She even had her own stool and coffee cup there. The other highlights in her life were Cathy George; grandchildren, Christopher (Katy) George, Sarah (George) Chester (Chris), Andrew George, Brian (Julie) Field and Jennifer Field. Della had eight great-grandchildren, Madison, Jacob and Hailey George; Hayden, Riley and Payton Chester; and Callie and Leah Field. Through an extended family, she was also devoted to Deborah George, a grandmother to Tim Hopkins and Jeff Hopkins and a great-grandmother to four, Hailey, Brittney, Timmy and Madison Hopkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, James George; mother, Norma Lewis; father, Arthur Lewis; and brother, Art Lewis.Services will be held at 10AM on Friday, October 28, 2011 at White-Emerson Mortuary, 13304 Philadelphia St., Whittier. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask donations to be made to Hospice of Presbyterian, 15050 Imperial Hwy., La Mirada, CA 90638.
