Paul Charles Bowers

Paul Charles Bowers, 83, of Whittier, California, passed away on December 23, 2023 at PIH Health Hospice House.

A resident of Whittier since 1989, Paul was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 29, 1940, to the late Charles Wilbur Bowers and the late Mary Elizabeth Thompson Bowers. Paul grew up in Glendale, and graduated from Hoover High School and the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force Reserve and served as a medic during the Vietnam War.

He began his career in sales for Xerox, worked in the securities industry for Lehman Brothers, but spent the majority of his professional life in healthcare philanthropy, at hospitals including St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, the Norris Cancer Center at USC, and Inter-Community Medical Center (now Emanate Health) in Covina.

He was most proud of his long association with PIH Health Whittier Hospital, where, with a team of dedicated volunteers and donors, he lead the effort to secure philanthropic funding for the Hubert Perry Health Pavilion, the Patricia Scheifly Breast Health Center, the Wells Medical Office Building and the Ruby Golleher Oncology Center at PIH as well as the PIH Hospice House, one of the first of its kind in California.

Paul was devoted to his family and his dogs; he loved the outdoors, travel, and USC football. He was unfailingly generous and congenial and enjoyed maintaining a legion of lifelong friends. He was known for his enthusiastic story-telling and his many conversations along his daily dog-walking route. He was a member of Whittier Area Community Church.

His grandchildren, Maíre and Seana Rayburn, and his stepdaughter, Caitlin Pinnt brought him special joy and care.

Paul is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan, three daughters, Kimberly Gutierrez (Travis) of Chino Hills, Cynthia Bowers of Durango, Colorado, and Caitlin Pinnt (Aaron) of Upland, and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held later this winter. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to PIH Health Hospice, c/o PIH Health Foundation, 12401 Washington Boulevard, Whittier, CA 90602.
