June Margery Jones (nee Wertz) passed away on January 19, 2026 in Whittier, California at the age of 101 years. She was born on January 16, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents, Harold and Marjorie, were temporarily living in St. Louis in order for Harold to complete his apprenticeship as a jeweler and engraver. After June’s birth, the family moved back to Altoona, Pennsylvania where they originated. June's sister, Jeanne, was born 15 months after June and they became and remained the best of friends for the rest of their lives. June left school in the 10th grade to work for the Sylvania Electronics Company. She worked on an assembly line as a lead person setting the pace for the rest of the line. After June’s grandmother died in 1943, the Wertz family moved to Downey, California and June went to work for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach in support of the war effort.
June met Alvin Jones at Faye Rudy's Ballroom in Montebello in late 1945. They married on Palm Sunday,1946, at the Downey Methodist Church and made a home together in Montebello. In 1949, their first son Alan was born, followed by a second son Ronald in 1952, and a third son Leonard in 1964. June and Alvin later moved to Whittier in 1971 where they both lived until their passing.
June was a very kind, caring, conscientious, strong, hardworking wife and mother who loved God, her family and animals. She set very high standards for herself and those around her particularly when it came to honesty, integrity and standing up for what was right. June’s Christian faith was strong and important to her just as her life-long membership in the Methodist Church. She had a tremendous sense of humor and really enjoyed a good laugh. When it came to animals, June always enjoyed visiting with a cat or dog and would often leave food and water out for the stray cats in her neighborhood.
June was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Alvin Jones; her sister, Jeanne Couey; her daughters-in-law, Elizabeth Jones and Cleta Jones; and her grandson, Nathaniel Alan Jones. She is survived by her sons Alan, Ron, and Leonard (wife Gretchen); her grandchildren Tara Jones, Eric Jones (wife Savannah), Kiersten Jones and Kendall Jones; and her great grandchildren Alexandra Dalke, Reid Jones, and Brady Jones. In addition, she had many nieces and nephews including Carol Mouton, Caryn Couey, Bob Couey, Vicki Chilicki, David Jenkins, Darrell Morgenstern, Dale Jenkins, and Donna Fletcher who, with their children, comprise her extended family.
A Celebration of Life service for relatives and friends will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 9, at the East Whittier United Methodist Church located at 10005 S. Cole Rd., Whittier. Interment will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
