Herbert Sim-On Chin, MD

May 25, 1942 — December 21, 2023

Hacienda Heights

Dr Herbert S. Chin, MD peacefully passed away on December 21, 2023 in Whittier, CA at the age of 81.  He was born on May 25, 1942 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  He was a long time resident of Hacienda Heights, CA where he practiced psychiatric medicine and raised a family.

Dr Chin spent most of youth in Singapore where he was a proud old boy of the Raffles Institution (RI).  As a young boy in Singapore, Oxley road was his playground and he took pride in the scoldings by his neighbor, the future First Prime Minister, Lee Kwan Yew.

Post RI education, he found his way to America pursuing greater opportunities.  He often talks about his first job in America being a grape picker in Napa Valley, CA.  He made his way through school and graduated from Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, MA.  He graduated medical school from Perpetual Help College of Medicine in Manilla, PI in 1985.

Dr. Chin was one of the early practitioners of psychiatric medicine.  He practiced in a time when behavioral health medicine was not mainstream.  His career ranged from several state prisons and private practices in Southern and Central California.  Dr Chin leaves behind a legacy of a healer.  His private practice in Hacienda Heights, CA helped many people through professional school, academic, business, and family endeavors.

Outside of his medical career, Dr Chin loved having lively discussions in politics, religion, and traveling to see extended family in Asia.  He knew enough words to flirt in multiple languages.  If he had one superpower, he would be able to have a good laugh with the most marginalized person of any group.

Dr Chin is survived by his wife of 44 years, Regina; children, Christopher and Craig Chin.

A family visual will be held in Napa Valley Memorial Park on Sat Feb 10th
