Listen to Obituary

Gene Edward Getz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, in Whittier, California, at the age of 80. Born on November 29, 1944, in Merced, California, Gene's journey through life impacted all those fortunate enough to know him.

Gene's devotion to family was evident in every aspect of his life. He cherished his wife, Shirley, demonstrating a love that reflected the depth of Christ's love for the Church. Together, they crafted a beautiful life filled with cherished moments, and though their time together was too brief, Gene's affection for Shirley was unwavering. He took great pride in his relationship with his baby brother, Walt, communicating frequently and fostered a bond that speaks of brotherly love and support.

As a dedicated father, Gene found immense joy in his relationship with his daughter, Cindy, speaking with her daily to share and reflect on their lives. This unique connection exemplified the relationship many aspire to have between parents and their children. His love extended warmly to his step-daughters, Leann and Beth, whom he embraced with open arms and genuine affection. Gene's heart was further filled with pride and love for his seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, all of whom brought him boundless joy and happiness.

A dedicated member of Pioneer Baptist Church since 2013, Gene quickly became an integral part of his church family. In partnership with Shirley, he helped teach Sunday School, positively impacting the lives of many young people. The continued visits from former students now in their twenties speak volumes about the lasting impression Gene left on those he taught and mentored.

In addition to his family commitments, Gene's spirit of service was profound. With a servant's heart, he sought to help others, resulting in recognition for his community involvement. In 2014, he received the President's Volunteer Service Award from President Barack Obama, acknowledging his tireless commitment to strengthening communities through volunteer work. His contributions were also honored by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program for his unwavering support locally.

Gene was proud of his military service and was grateful for the opportunity to serve his country in the Navy from a young age. He earned several honors during his four years, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the 1st Good Conduct Medal. His participation in Memorial Day and Veterans Day services illustrated the respect and pride he held for his time in service.

In his leisure, Gene cultivated a passion for woodworking. His masterful skill enabled him to create thousands of delightful toys for underprivileged children, alongside personalized pieces for his family and friends. Gene's artistic talent was complemented by his willingness to fulfill even the most ambitious requests from Shirley for her Sunday School class projects, always delivering creations beyond expectations.

Gene Edward Getz was an uncommon man whose love for the Lord, family, and friends enriched the lives of all around him. His legacy of compassion and dedication will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be profoundly missed, and we are all the richer for having shared life with him.
