Listen to Obituary

Elvira Victoria “Vicki” Marshall was born on April 27, 1916 in New York City. She left us on August 6, 2025 at the age of 109 years and 101 days, surrounded by her son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Cora Marshall, granddaughters Michelle Thomas and Geneva Obiols, and many great-grandchildren.

Her parents, Béla and Emma Vitarius, were both born in Hungary, immigrated through Ellis Island in 1904, and raised Vicki along with her four sisters. Béla built a very successful business in Hoboken, New Jersey just across the Hudson River from NYC, and Vicki went to high school there. She was a classmate of Frank Sinatra, who was 5 months older than she, graduated in 1934, and then went on to the University of Wisconsin at Madison to earn her BA in English in 1938.

Vicki was 4 years old when women got the right to vote. She spoke of watching thousands of women parade down the streets of NYC, even though she was too young to fully appreciate why. She stayed in New York during WWII while the men were away serving, and she became the first woman to run the general ledger of a Wall Street bank.

In 1947 she met and married Army veteran Robert E. “Bob” Marshall, and they raised their two children, Geri and Bruce there until the opportunity to move West to California arose in 1957.

They rented an apartment, and Vicki got a job teaching with the Norwalk-La Mirada school district. They eventually bought a home in nearby Whittier, and she later moved on to the Valle Lindo School District in South El Monte, where she remained teaching elementary grades for nearly 40 years. During that time she earned her Masters of Education degree at Whittier College, and she continually took advanced training courses throughout her career.

Vicki was always a joiner, starting with the PTA’s when her kids were small, and throughout her life she was always the first to sign up for almost any group. In later years, she was an avid member of the Red Hats, the Gadabouts, and other social groups, and she was also the Vice Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary in Southern California.

She finally voluntarily gave up her driver’s license at age 97 when Geri moved in to care for her, and she stayed in Whittier until Geri’s passing in 2023. She then moved to Santa Paula with Bruce and Cora.

It’s impossible to overstate how much she will be missed by friends and family. She was vibrant, funny, caring, considerate, generous, and just a wonderful human being who was literally loved by all. She is now happy and at peace, and those left behind will struggle to fill the void of her passing.

Viewing will begin at White-Emerson Mortuary in Whittier at 9 AM, and services will start at 10 AM on Aug 15. She will be buried following the service alongside her husband Bob at the Riverside National Cemetery. The service will be streamed at https://www.lovestream.io/funeral/elvira-vicki-marshall, and everyone is welcome to join live or view later at your convenience.
