Alan Carl Nyberg (1960 – 2025)

Alan Carl Nyberg, 65, passed away suddenly on September 14, 2025, in Whittier, California. Born on February 21, 1960, in Portland, Oregon, and raised in Reseda, California, Alan lived a life marked by intelligence, humor, and an irresistible charm that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

A proud graduate of the University of Southern California, Alan shared both his alma mater and his Trojan spirit with his beloved partner of nearly 30 years, Robert “Bobby” Mabe. Together, they built a rich life full of travel, music, food, and friendship. They traveled often, taking cruises through Europe and frequent trips to Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta, and Australia. Each July they also returned to Solomons Island, Maryland, where Alan treasured time with friends and the tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July — helping decorate boats, joining the parade, and enjoying the fireworks, always among the highlights of summer.

Alan enjoyed a distinguished career in finance and accounting that spanned more than four decades. After graduating from the University of Southern California, he began at Ernst & Young and went on to hold senior roles with Bally Total Fitness, LA Fitness, and the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, from which he retired in 2022. Known for his brilliance, integrity, and leadership, he was especially respected for achieving substantial savings — measured in the millions — that greatly benefited his department.

Beyond work, Alan embraced life with energy and passion. He was a true wine connoisseur, maintaining a cellar of more than 600 bottles, especially 1995 vintages, the year he and Bobby met. He and Bobby also shared a love of playing the piano and classical music. Alan was an accomplished cook and an avid bowler who relished his weekly league with good friends. At home, he poured his creativity into gardening — his roses in particular became a neighborhood showpiece — and he loved nothing more than relaxing by the pool with Bobby at his side. With blue eyes as bright as the sky, an infectious smile, and a wit that was as clever as it was playful, often with a touch of mischief that always left friends laughing, Alan lived fully, loved deeply, and livened every room he entered.

Alan is survived by his devoted spouse, Robert Mabe, his brother, Eric Nyberg, and his sister, Susan Nyberg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Betty Nyberg, and his sister, Donna Nyberg.

Plans for a celebration of Alan’s life will be shared soon. All who knew him are welcome to join in remembering a remarkable man whose warmth and spirit will never be forgotten.
